Evaluation of Denture Base Adaptation Using Conventional, Subtractive and Additive Technologies


Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, an in vitro study using volumetric 3D analysis to evaluate the adaptation of denture bases fabricated with 4 different techniques.

One of the most important factors that determines the success of a complete dentures is the adaptation of the denture base to the mucosa as retention is achieved when the gap between the two is as small as possible. For this study, edentulous maxillary and mandibular casts were scanned and denture bases were designed using different fabrication methods: compression molding (CM), injection molding (IM), PMMA milling (PM), and 3D printing (3D). The volumetric gap between denture base and cast was calculated and the reproducibility of each fabrication method was also assessed.

According to the results, denture bases milled from PMMA blocks showed better adaptation than 3D printed, or wax milled and conventionally fabricated denture and PMMA milling can be considered a reproducible technique that enables the construction of accurate dentures.
