Zirconia Full-Arch Implant Supported Prostheses: An Up to 8-year Retrospective Study With 140 Jaws From Private Practice
Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a retrospective study of zirconia prostheses co-authored by ACP members Avinash Bidra, BDS, MS, FACP, Armand Bedrossian, DDS, MS, FACP, Sindhu Kanikicharla BDS, MS, FACP, Lawrence Brecht, DDS, and Konstantinos Chochlidakis DDS, MS, FACP.
Zirconia implant-supported full-arch fixed complete dental prostheses (IFCDPs) have been shown to have high survival rates in the literature, however, catastrophic framework fracture remains a concern, particularly when prosthetic dimensions are reduced.
The primary purpose of this retrospective study was to conduct detailed three-dimensional (3D) measurements of CSSA for the entire prostheses and establish correlations between dimensional parameters and catastrophic fracture incidence. The secondary aim was to determine survival and complication rates of 140 monolithic zirconia IFCDPs derived from the databases of five prosthodontic private practices, with a minimum follow-up of 1 year and extending up to 8 years.
A total of 140 monolithic zirconia prostheses were analyzed, comprising 77 maxillary and 63 mandibular restorations. Monolithic zirconia IFCDPs yielded a 95.7% survival rate after a mean observation period of 3 years (range of 1–8 years). Within the limitations of this study, the maxillary and mandibular connector CSSA should be at least 80 mm2, and the linear measurements should be more than 10 mm during CAD design of the final prosthesis to ensure zirconia prosthesis strength against fracture.
