This presentation will provide prosthodontics residents and early practitioners with a practical framework for evaluating dental associate agreements and identifying contractual provisions that affect their professional responsibilities, compensation, benefits, clinical autonomy, and future career opportunities. Topics will include employee and independent contractor classification, scope of professional duties, compensation structures and deductions, benefits, termination rights and obligations, restrictive covenants, and other material contract risks. Attendees will learn how to recognize potentially unfavorable terms, assess their practical consequences, and identify provisions that may warrant clarification or negotiation before signing.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to: 

  • Distinguish employee and independent contractor classifications. 
  • Evaluate compensation, benefits, duties, and termination provisions. 
  • Assess restrictive covenants,binding agreements, and related career risks. 
     

Biography: Joe Hess, JD is the owner of Joe Hess Law Firm, PLLC, a health-care focused practice dedicated to representing dentists and dental specialists across the country. Joe advises on practice acquisitions and sales, start-ups, DSO transactions, partnerships and dental employment matters. Joe is also a frequent speaker, presenting at universities, study clubs, and dental societies across the country. Joe earned his Doctor of Law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
