Additively Manufactured Dental Crown with Color Gradient and Graded Structure


Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a technique report assessing the feasibility of manufacturing a dental crown with internal color gradient and graded structure design using additive manufacturing technology.

Creating a bio-inspired dental restoration that reproduces the structure and properties of human enamel and dentin has been a long-term goal for clinical scientists.

AM technologies have the capability of manufacturing complex geometric designs and more importantly can process multiple materials with different colors and properties simultaneously. Material jetting or polyjet printing is an AM technique that is capable of manufacturing different materials with different colors and properties with minimum post-processing procedures.

A mandibular first molar was prepared and a monolayer dental crown was designed in a dental software. A multilayer crown was manufactured with gradient color and graded structure using a material jetting printer. Different materials with different colors and properties were used and mixed in different ratios during manufacturing to achieve the prospected design.

The technique described here shows the feasibility of manufacturing multilayer dental crowns; however, further studies are needed to assess the marginal and internal discrepancies and mechanical properties of the AM multilayer restorations with graded structure.
