Thank you for your interest in the ACP Digital Dentistry Curriculum. Our goal is to aid in your implementation of a comprehensive digital dentistry educational and patient care program.
As an important part of this project, additional content was created to establish a resource library to assist dental schools and faculty with their digital curriculum implementation. These materials include the curriculum framework (core document), implementation details, competencies, learning objectives, course details, and business planning.
We have also developed core educational content that includes PowerPoints and other key teaching materials (e.g., foundational textbook) in support of the curriculum.
- Digital Dentistry Curriculum for Predoctoral and Advanced Prosthodontic Education (Core Document)
- The Abstracts Compilation includes contributions from five contributing journals and their generous editors, including more than 160 publications. This compilation provides the current best evidence on digital dentistry. The compilation is organized under key topical headings that allow individuals to move through the document and directly access the full publication.
- A White Paper that outlines the recent advances in dentistry and how prosthodontics has aided the adoption of digital technologies in all forms to improve the quality of care and patient experiences.
- The Glossary of Digital Dental Terms is a convenient reference document to assure clarity of communication in this emerging field of dentistry.
- A digital core textbook, Fundamentals of CAD/CAM Dentistry, was donated by Dr. Jonathan Ferencz and Dr. Nelson Silva. Available for Apple Books and Amazon Kindle, this e-book is intended to aid students and serve as an introductory guide for the clinician starting the digital journey.
There are many more resources to offer guidance and support the implementation process for your institution. Please contact digitalcurriculum@prosthodontics.org to establish an ACP account and access these resources.
Implementation Experience: UCLA
In this video, Dr. Ben Wu describes how his team integrated digital dentistry into their predoctoral curriculum at UCLA. They began with a robust digital infrastructure but faced problems such as uneven distribution, unfocused innovations, and poor economy of scale. Dr. Wu shares their keys to success, including a carefully-planned rollout and the parties they needed to engage for support. He also notes that the rewards were considerable.
"This whole digital transformation is the one thing that gets faculty and students really excited. They come early, they get ready, and they want to start playing," says Dr. Wu (excerpt). "We haven't seen anything like that in terms of getting people interested in learning."
Implementation Experience: Rutgers
In this video, Dr. Heba Elkassaby discusses her committee's efforts to integrate digital dentistry into curricula school-wide at Rutgers. They worked in phases, starting with a business plan and SWOT analysis, moving to renovation of their digital laboratory and strategies for training of students and faculty, and culminating in a finely-tuned workflow and quality assurance process.
"We would ask one faculty to train three students only, and then each student would train their classmate," says Dr. Elkassaby (excerpt). "The feedback from this model was really interesting because the students mentioned that, when you learn a technique, and then you teach it to another classmate, you learn more."
ACP Digital Dentistry Curriculum Initiative Workgroup
The role of this group is to aid with the curriculum implementation within schools, develop application of the curriculum for alternate educational pathways in Continued Education, training in private practice, and continued maintenance of the program with the ultimate goal of advancing digital dentistry within the prosthodontic specialty.
