Vision 5034
Vision 5034: Advancing the Specialty of Prosthodontics
A Strategic Commitment to Excellence
Vision 5034 is a bold initiative launched by the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) with a clear goal: to ensure that at least 50% of all prosthodontists are board certified by the year 2034. This effort reflects a deep commitment to elevating the specialty through education, mentorship, and professional development. Board certification is more than a credential—it’s a reflection of advanced training, clinical expertise, and a dedication to lifelong learning. Certified prosthodontists are recognized for their ability to deliver complex, evidence-based care and for their leadership in dental innovation. For patients, this translates into confidence, quality, and long-term results.
Laying the Foundation: Phase I
The first phase of Vision 5034 focuses on education and early engagement. Pre-doctoral faculty are encouraged to identify and guide promising dental students into prosthodontic residency programs, while post-graduate educators are working to ensure that residents challenge the American Board of Prosthodontics (ABP) exams before graduation. This dual approach helps build a strong pipeline of future board-certified specialists.
Expanding Support: Phase II
Phase II is designed to support practicing prosthodontists who wish to pursue board certification. At the heart of this phase is a mentorship program that connects candidates with experienced, board-certified colleagues. These mentors offer personalized guidance on treatment planning, case presentation, and exam preparation—often through virtual meetings to accommodate busy schedules.
The ACP Central Office plays a key role in coordinating this effort. It maintains a database of volunteer mentors and candidates, facilitates pairings, and ensures that resources and communications are kept up to date. Regional Directors and State Sections also contribute by promoting the program, sharing exam requirements, and referring interested members to the Central Office.
Importantly, Vision 5034 respects the diverse paths within the profession. Many highly respected prosthodontists are not board certified, and Phase II is not intended to challenge their standing. Instead, it offers a supportive pathway for those who wish to pursue certification, adding value to their professional journey.
