Enhancing Student Learning in Dental Anatomy by Using Virtual Three‐Dimensional Models

Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, Drs. Amira Elgreatly and Ahmed Mahrous describe a novel educational technique using videos and web‐based portals to demonstrate how to create a virtual three‐dimensional tooth model from a scan of a natural tooth for use in dental anatomy courses.

Knowledge of dental anatomy is necessary for providing restorations or prostheses that are esthetically pleasing and functional. In traditional anatomy courses, extracted human teeth are used as visual aids, but they can be difficult to use due to limited supply, risk of breakage, and CDC protocols regarding handling and sterilization procedures.

At the University of Iowa, the dental anatomy course uses virtual three-dimensional tooth models of natural teeth as an alternative to physical natural teeth. This technique offers a cost-effective, hygienic, low maintenance and accessible approach to dental anatomy education and creates a more substantial learning experience for students.
