Traditional Private Practice & the DSO Practice: Are They Really That Different?

Following this session, the attendee should be able to:
- Describe the development of and fallacy inherent in the term 'Corporate' dentistry.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each practice model.
- Identify the operating principle required in either model to allow the practice to function within the 'Zone of Success'.
Within our specialty, new graduating residents as well as existing clinicians are faced with greater challenges than ever before. These include the amount of educational debt that they owe, the changing specialty referral patterns that exist within our profession, the challenge of securing financing to purchase or buy-into an existing traditional private practice, and the skills required to successfully sustain and grow a practice. Dental Specialty Organizations (DSO) can offer several advantages to practitioners, including a more predictable income stream without financial obligations. Relying on 23 years in private practice and 14 years in a DSO setting, the two practice models will be compared in terms of career opportunities for prosthodontists.
Biography: Dr. Adams attended the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, receiving his DDS degree and a master’s degree in prosthodontics. He maintained a private prosthodontic practice for 23 years, prior to moving to Denver, Colorado as the founding prosthodontist with ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers in 2006. In 2014, Dr. Adams assumed the position of VP of Clinical Affairs with ClearChoice Management Services Company.
