A Method For Economical Smartphone‐Based Clinical 3D Facial Scanning

Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a study describing a smartphone-based photogrammetry approach for rapid scanning of faces in a clinical setting. Authors Renee Christine Nightingale, Maureen Therese Ross, Mark Colin Allenby, Maria Ann Woodruff, and Sean Keiran Powell compared 3D scans captured by operators using photogrammetry against an Artec Spider structured light scanner.

Five novice operators were recruited to watch an instructional video and then scan 20 healthy adult participants using an iPhone with fixed camera settings. On average, iPhone scans were accurate to within 1.3 ±0.3 mm of a gold standard reference scan and 88 ±14% complete.

These results demonstrate the potential for the use of smartphone photogrammetry as a rapid, non-invasive, low-cost alternative to expensive industrial scanners for acquiring 3D patient face morphology.
