For more than 40 years her hand was like a permanent fixture over her mouth whenever she smiled. Gaping spaces on each side of the upper and lower jaws were very visible, and she was always self-conscious of them. The 58-year-old patient, S. Olson, presented the chief complaint of wanting to do something to replace her missing teeth. She was referred to Dr. Rachel Squier by her husband, who previously had some repair work done by her and was extremely satisfied.
Dr. Squier took X-rays and impressions, developed photos of the "before look" and consulted with her surgeon, Dr. Shafer. Together, they decided to perform five implants: two on each side of the upper jaw and one on the lower left side. Seven teeth would be put in place.
Before the surgery Ms. Olson recalled, "Both Dr. Squier and Dr. Shafer assured me that there would be little pain; and that all five implants would be done at the same time; and that temporary teeth would be attached to the implants the same day; and I would be home in time for dinner. This was unbelievable to me at the time." Despite the patient's disbelief, Dr. Squier attached the temporary teeth to the implants, took numerous photographs and sent her home with absolutely no pain.
"The surgery started, and I never felt a thing. Dr. Shafer’s work began, and to say that both he and Dr. Squier are geniuses does not do justice to their professional mannerisms and techniques." Eight weeks later, final impressions were made, and the two upper bridges were fabricated with porcelain-fused-to-metal bridges and screwed into place on the implants
Ms. Olson, elated as a result of the treatment she received, continued, "To say that I am a very satisfied customer is not enough; I am thrilled to be able to smile and eat and chew gum with all the confidence in the world. My smile and my sincere gratitude are for Dr. Rachel Squier and Dr. Shafer and their most wonderful staff."
